For six years during the early nineties, Saldanha designed and produced a menswear collection under his own label, Gaspar Saldanha, selling it to high-end stores such as Barneys, Saks and Bergdorf Goodman. The line which began as men's furnishings, developed into a full blown sportswear collection whose customer was the affluent man "not afraid to be noticed". Celebrities including Antonio Banderas and Jude Law sported Saldanha's designs in the media.

While attending design school, Saldanha won the Mattarazo Award for printed textiles. By the time he graduated, he had already started his own printing mill, STAMPA 4, in Rio de Janeiro.
He came to New York on a scholarship to attend FIT and went on to design fabrics for Seventh Avenue's foremost companies including Calvin Klein and Anne Klein.
He then launched the label Native Brazil: a resort wear collection featuring hand-screened pareos. In it's first season, the line had immediate retail and editorial success.

Gaspar Saldanha was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, to a family of artists who had a great influence on his knack for color and pattern. His grandfather Paulo Werneck designed mosaic murals for Oscar Niemeyer’s Brasilia; aunt Ione Saldanha was a famous painter of the Brazilian modernist art; his mother Regina Werneck is a respected illustrator; his older sister Paula Saldanha is a film director/producer and his sister Claudia Saldanha an art curator. Although based in Ipanema, the family built a modernist home in the Island of Paqueta, where the tropical setting greatly inspired his prints.
